• Sharp metal objects – Knives, scissors, needles, and other sharp objects are commonly believed to repel spirits. Some families place scissors or needles near newborns for protection.
• Keys or metal objects – In some local traditions, jingling metal keys is believed to deter a Pontianak because of the association with iron.
• Religious prayers and sacred texts – Muslims may recite verses from the Quran (such as Ayat al-Kursi), while people of other faiths may pray or use their own sacred symbols for spiritual protection. This varies by religious tradition rather than folklore alone.
• Protective charms (azimat/tangkal) – Traditional amulets are believed by some to protect against malevolent spirits.

Other well-known folklore says a Pontianak is associated with:

• Banana trees.
• The scent of frangipani (plumeria) flowers.
• A baby's cry or eerie laughter, with the legend saying a soft cry means she is close, while a loud cry means she is farther away.

These stories are an important part of Southeast Asian folklore and culture, but they are not supported by scientific evidence as descriptions of real supernatural entities.
