Items feared by water ghosts

In traditional Chinese folklore and Taoist folk beliefs, water ghosts (水鬼 / 水中阴灵) are sometimes described as being associated with cold, dark, Yin environments. Things symbolically connected with Yang energy, fire, brightness, and protection are therefore traditionally regarded as things they may fear or avoid.

🔥 Things traditionally believed to repel or frighten water ghosts

ItemTraditional symbolism
🔥 FireStrong Yang energy; opposite of cold Yin water
🕯️ Candles / lanternsLight dispels darkness and represents Yang
☀️ SunlightPowerful Yang energy; especially midday sun
🔔 BellsSound is traditionally used to dispel or disturb Yin entities
🧨 FirecrackersLoud sound + fire; traditionally used to drive away spirits
🗡️ Taoist swordSymbolic spiritual weapon against Yin entities
🧿 Taoist talismans (符)Used traditionally for protection and spirit-repelling
🪞 Bagua mirrorTraditionally believed to reflect/repel harmful Yin influences
🧂 SaltUsed in various folk traditions for purification/protection
🌿 Mugwort 艾草Traditionally associated with cleansing and protection
🌶️ Red-coloured objectsRed is strongly Yang-associated in Chinese folk tradition
🪙 CoinsTraditionally associated with Yang/human-world energy and protection
🐯 Tiger imageryTiger symbolism is traditionally regarded as powerful and protective
🐉 Dragon imageryEspecially associated with controlling and commanding water
🐓 RoosterIn Chinese folklore, rooster crowing is associated with the arrival of daylight/Yang

🌊 Especially interesting: fire vs. water

From a traditional Five Elements (五行) perspective:

Water = Yin, cold, darkness
Fire = Yang, heat, brightness

So fire is probably the strongest symbolic opposite of a water ghost in this type of folklore.

However, these are traditional beliefs and folklore, not scientifically demonstrated facts. Different Chinese/Taoist traditions also have different interpretations of 水鬼.

In Chinese folk religion and Taoist-inspired traditions, the following are commonly associated with protection against 水鬼、水煞、阴气. These are cultural/folkloric beliefs, not proven supernatural effects.

🛡️ 20 traditional protective items

18🧿 Five-emperor coins / 五帝钱Popular traditional Feng Shui protective object
19🪵 Peach wood / 桃木One of the best-known traditional spirit-protection materials
20🗡️ Seven-star sword symbolism / 七星剑Traditional Taoist ritual weapon symbolism

🔥 Traditionally considered the strongest combination

A folk/Taoist-style “Yang protection” combination would symbolically combine:

🔥 Fire + ☀️ sunlight + 🔔 bronze bell + 🪞 Bagua mirror + 📜 talisman + 🪙 Five Emperor Coins + 🌿 mugwort + 🔴 red

For a location beside a river, lake or sea, traditional Feng Shui would generally emphasize good lighting, cleanliness, ventilation and avoiding excessively dark, stagnant spaces, rather than trying to physically confront or harm anything.

Important: Don't use fire, fireworks, candles, electrical equipment or other objects dangerously near water or flammable structures. These practices are best understood as cultural symbolism rather than actual protection from supernatural beings.

Items feared by pontianak

According to Malay, Indonesian, and Singaporean folklore, the Pontianak (also called Kuntilanak in Indonesia) is believed to fear or be repelled by certain objects. These are traditional beliefs and legends, not scientifically verified facts.

Common items said to frighten or ward off a Pontianak include:

  • Iron nails – The most famous belief is that driving an iron nail into the back of a Pontianak's neck subdues or transforms her. Carrying iron nails is also traditionally believed to offer protection.
  • Sharp metal objects – Knives, scissors, needles, and other sharp objects are commonly believed to repel spirits. Some families place scissors or needles near newborns for protection.
  • Keys or metal objects – In some local traditions, jingling metal keys is believed to deter a Pontianak because of the association with iron.
  • Religious prayers and sacred texts – Muslims may recite verses from the Quran (such as Ayat al-Kursi), while people of other faiths may pray or use their own sacred symbols for spiritual protection. This varies by religious tradition rather than folklore alone.
  • Protective charms (azimat/tangkal) – Traditional amulets are believed by some to protect against malevolent spirits.

Other well-known folklore says a Pontianak is associated with:

  • Banana trees.
  • The scent of frangipani (plumeria) flowers.
  • A baby's cry or eerie laughter, with the legend saying a soft cry means she is close, while a loud cry means she is farther away.

These stories are an important part of Southeast Asian folklore and culture, but they are not supported by scientific evidence as descriptions of real supernatural entities.
